Kemp Sings New Tune
By Alexis Frankel '99
Have you heard about GA's chorus? During the past year, Head of
Upper School Tony Garvan, Head of School Jim Connor, Chair of Music
Department Janice Kemp, and new teacher Michael Kemp designed a new
opportunity in the upper school. This exciting plan is a revision of the
Academy Chorus, with a new rehearsal time, a new conductor, and most of all
a new attitude. Mr. Kemp, the Director of Music Ministries at the Abington
Presbyterian Church, will conduct GA's chorus. Mr. Kemp, who came from a
very musical family, began singing in restaurants during the Christmas
season at age five. He continued singing and at age 15 toured Europe with
his family performing in various places. Throughout college, he ran a
music program and conducted several groups as well. Because he grew up
around music, and his entire family was musical, Mr. Kemp said, "It was
natural to be a musician."
When Mr. Garvan, Mr. Connor, Mrs. Kemp, and Mr. Kemp discussed a
new choir, they decided it was important to involve more people and develop
more consistency. When the choir met during the school day, many people
who would have liked to be a part of the choir had no time in their
schedules either because of a heavy load of academics, or involvement in
other artistic endeavors. The new rehearsal time from three to four
o'clock on Mondays and Thursdays will be more convenient for participation.
Also, most coaches have made it possible for students to be a part of the
chorus. This new time also ensures the availability of the accompanist,
Jodi Bohr, who teaches music in the lower school
When asked what he likes about conducting, Mr. Kemp responded, "I
like to see people do their best and create beauty." Mr. Kemp believes
that singing is like "letting out one's soul." Mr. Kemp loves "to share
that soul with the kids" and loves "to sing with verve, excitement, and
boldness." Conducting for Mr. Kemp is magical.
Mr. Kemp said that a chorus is built in stages. His goal is "to
help the choir to find its own." He says, "This is not my choir; I will
only be there to help your choir.
Mr. Kemp hopes to engage the chorus in some sort of a master class
after the chorus is established and solid. Also, a trip is planned for
early spring. This trip will allow the chorus to perform in the greater
community.
Many students are excited about working with Mr. Kemp. Although
already about 30 people are enrolled in chorus, more students are
encouraged to join! (especially boys!!!!)
Mr. Kemp hopes that members of the chorus will be able to be proud
of their group. He hopes it will be an honor to be part of this wonderful
developing ensemble and opportunity.
