pkunzip

Files come in different sizes. Bandwidth determines how long it takes to download a file. The smaller the file - the faster the download.

Many files can be made smaller (compressed) before transferring and decompressed after the transfer. If you download a file that has been compressed using pkzip (it will have an extension of .zip), you will need to run a program called pkunzip to decompress it.

If you would like to try a shareware version of pkunzip, all you need do is:

  1. create a directory called utility

  2. click here to start downloading pkunzip.zip

  3. select your utility directory as the download destination

  4. "rename" pkunzip.zip to pkunzip.exe

To run pkunzip you can either:

    1. Run From a DOS prompt
      1. copy pkunzip.exe to the same directory as the .zip file
      2. from a DOS prompt type: pkunzip filename.zip (where filename is the name of the file to be unzipped.)
      3. you will see files fly by as they are decompressed)

    2. Associate With .zip Files
      1. in Windows, open "File Manager" or "Winfile"
      2. choose "file"
      3. choose "associate"
      4. type zip in the little pop-up box
      5. choose the "browse" button
      6. highlight pkunzip.exe in the utility directory
      7. choose "ok"
      8. double click on any .zip file to unzip it (you will see files fly by as they are decompressed)
      9. back in File Manager, choose "window" from the menu bar
      10. choose "refresh"
      11. the decompressed files should appear
