The George Taylor Manor

Sorry, no longer available. Please click here.

“Stane Hame” was built just prior to the civil war on the banks of the Delaware River. The summer cottage of wealthy Philadelphia lawyer, George Taylor, it is situated on 5.2 acre estate on the Delaware riverbank. It carries riparian rights of 1.2 acres. Built circa 1854, it was one of the riverfront summer homes developed by Messrs. Andrew and James Manderson, for sale to rich Philadelphians who wanted to escape the heat of the city and perhaps yellow fever. Cottages were constructed across the street to house the servants. It was probably well into the twentieth century before the household help was permitted to use what is at present the two bedroom apartment. All available records place a George Taylor Esq. as the original owner of the home in Edgewater Park which was orginally in Williamsborough County. An 1875 real estate brochure written by one E. P. Townsend, M.D., “The name Edgewater Park was given by Messrs. Andrew and James Manderson to whose foresight and good taste the people of that section are indebted for the excellent plans on which their town was laid out; the erection of some of the finest mansions and cottages, and the great variety of the ornamental shade trees that so plentifully abound … Some of the most extensive private establishments are, of course, on the riverfront. Among the finest are the residence of Walter Freeman, Esq. … Mr. George Kirkham, … George Taylor, Esq.. These are the beautiful county seats surrounded by magnificent grounds, and fine enough for the occupancy of princes.” Built in the Italiante Style that was popular in the pre-Civil War period, the three storied house is five bays wide and two rooms deep. Sandstone from Andrew Manderson’s Pennsylvania quarry was use and no expense was spared in the building. The grand front door is inset with leaded glass and the lights and transom are of large, bevelled glass panels. There are 12 foot ceilings in the foyer, living room and dining room. The living room has wooden ceiling beans that end in gargoyles and a pink stone fireplace that was imported from Italy and is reportedly one thousand years old. The striking chestnut paneling was also imported. The house has withstood the test of time superbly. The parquet flooring which covers the main downstairs rooms is the original flooring. Old photographs show a widow’s walk at the top of the house was removed around World War II.

It was originally a summer home and central heating was installed in the twentieth century. The 12 inch thick brick interior walls, lush landscape, the river breezes keep the house cool. The eight foot windows have pocket shutters. Sometime in the 1870’s, a Philadelphia attorney, Samuel K. Kirkpatrick, acquired the property. On October 6, 1887 he sold it to Mary E. Taylor, wife of the Philadelphia merchant, for $9,000. Whether or not she was related to the original George Taylor is anybody’s guess. Mary Taylor died on August 25, 1917 and deeded the house to her mother Helen McCutcheon. It is not clear if Helen ever lived in the house. On April 17, 1924, J.M. Wall, the owner of one of the largest rope manufacturing companies in the United States, purchased the home. The Walls were probably the first family to live in the house all year round. In 1943, Winifred and Frederick Gordon purchased the property. Upon their death, their sons sold the house to Dr. Arthur Von Deilen and his wife Marjorie in November, 1951. Dr. Von Deilen stood over 6 ft. 6in., originally a dentist, he quit practice to go back to medical school and earned a degree in reconstructive surgery. The Von Deilen’s had no children and are responsible for many of the changes and additions in the house. They transferred the original kitchen to an apartment and converted the butler’s pantry to the kitchen. Lois B. Yates is the present owner of the manor. During her ownership she has updated the master bedroom suite with a new bath, in keeping with the integrity of the home. She also installed a new bath off the nursery. The light and airy kitchen, remodeled 9 years ago, has three ovens, a Subzero refrigerator and top of the line cabinetry. In the sun room, now used as an office, are the rails of Hitler’s yacht which were put in by the previous owner. Installed in 1950, the gated elevator goes to the third floor where there is an in-law apartment with another renovated bath. The servants wing is now an apartment that has an income of $1,200. The heat is zoned into 5 separate areas and a new burner was installed in the oil furnace 5 years ago. Interior square footage to be approximately 8,800.
