St. Bernard students honor 106-year-old parish member BY KELLY MADSEN Staff Writer She shared her wonderful secrets of longevity with kids who have yet to see their teenage years: no drinking, no smoking and, Pray every day. These are the things Katherine Myers said has kept her alive for 106 years. The fifth through eighth grade Student Council representatives from Mayfair s St. Bernard s School gathered at Nazareth Hospital Friday to celebrate Katherine s remarkable birthday. Since Katherine is a member of the St. Bernard s Church, the parish minister, Sister Mary Beth, thought it might be important not only to honor Katherine, but to let some of the students experience some of life s lessons learned from so many years of living. She resides in Mayfair with Ed, her baby brother, as she calls him. He is 89. Katherine has a 91yearold sister, too. At her party, the students were buzzing with questions. Did you see ever see the R.M.S. Titanic? No, she hadn t, but remembers reading about the tragedy in the newspapers. Who was President when you were born? She didn t remember it was Benjamin Harrison, but she was well aware that Bill Clinton occupies the Oval Office today. During her birthday celebration, Katherine had as much fun as any kid; she blew on a party horn and enjoyed a slice of birthday cake. Andrew Pale, 11, hesitated when he was asked if he would like to live as long as Katherine. Then he smiled and said, No, because I want to get to heaven sooner than that.
